--next--> algorist's statement algorist versus abacists; donald knuth's xdefinitions from the art of computer programming, my favorite read at the time. the algorist group story: i created it in 1995 with roman verostko and i coined the term algorist to define our art movement and to identify the specificity of our works. i also wrote the algorists manifesto to help sort out who was an algorist and who was not: my 1995 historic, original algorists page is off line for now. i have to locate it, and post it again, if someone would help. (it used to be: http://hebert.kitp.ucsb.edu/studio/algorists.html) i have made several talks on algorithms in art, that can be traced years before the digital era. i should also post my slides. but there is a wikipedia page about algorithmic art: schools, styles, techniques, systems, methods, concepts. roman verostko also has a well documented algorists page.

if (creation && object of art && algorithm && one's own algorithm)
{ include * an algorist * }
elseif (!creation || !object of art || !algorithm || !one's own algorithm)
{ exclude * not an algorist * }
so artists who create an object of art with a process that includes their own algorithms are identified as algorists.
